He regrets that he hasn’t found the courage to hit dial every time he’s pulled up Rafael’s number for the past twenty-three nights; but the phone goes both ways, that’s the reasoning he’s used to keep his phone face down on his bedside table, as if hiding the screen will make it easier to acknowledge the fact that Rafael hasn’t called, either.

Sonny wonders whether Rafael has the same regrets, the same thoughts, and finds himself feeling guilty for hoping so.

“Times have changed, right?” Sonny asks with a short, breathless laugh. He doesn’t elaborate. Isaiah doesn’t need him to, he thinks, and sure enough, he’s proven right.

“It feels like that some days more than others,” Isaiah says.

Sonny frowns, biting at the inside of his cheek as his chest tightens with the courage he has to muster for his next question. “Was it difficult for you?” His voice cracks and he hates himself a little for it.

Isaiah smiles again. This one, Sonny does recognize. It’s really more of a smirk without any mean-spirited intent behind it, just a small tug at the corners of Isaiah’s lips, accompanied by downcast eyes and the slightest twitch of an eyebrow.

“Was what difficult for me?”

Yeah, Sonny knows that smile. It’s the one Isaiah had always defaulted to when asked a stupid question.

“You know what I’m asking.”

Isaiah nods, his expression softening. “I do. I do know.”

Sonny Carisi finally has an office to call his own. What better way to celebrate than by having his long-term boyfriend Rafael Barba drop by to christen it.

For as long as he could remember, he had been drawn to creation, his hands moving in certain rhythm, shaping paper and graphite, or crayon, or ink into new worlds. There was something therapeutic about capturing snapshots, moments, instants on paper, recorded for time immemorial, not the way it was, but the way he saw it.

It's the first time Sonny's stayed the night. The first time Rafael's seen him naked in the sun.

After resigning from his career as an A.D.A., Rafael moves to Boston with Sonny, and gets a job as a professor at Harvard. (Sonny thinks it's really hot.)
